Is there a code of practice?

Maintenance
This Code of Practice has been prepared by the Institution of Electrical Engineers with a view to determining the inspections and tests necessary to ensure that electrical equipment is maintained properly so as to prevent danger. Although reference is made to legislation, this chapter should not be considered as legal advice. In cases of doubt, the specific legislation mentioned should be consulted and legal advice obtained.
Regulation 4(2) of the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 states:
"As may be necessary to prevent danger, all systems shall be maintained so as to prevent, so far as is reasonably practicable, such danger."
Regulation 5 of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 states:
"Every employer shall ensure that work equipment is maintained in an efficient state, in efficient working order and in good repair".
The Approved Code of Practice and Guidance document to the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (L22) states that 'efficient' relates to how the condition of the equipment might affect health and safety; it is not concerned with productivity.

Inspection
The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 include a specific requirement that where the safety of work equipment depends on installation conditions, and where conditions of work are liable to lead to deterioration, the equipment shall be inspected.
The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 require that where safety of work equipment depends on installation conditions, the installation is inspected on completion, and if subject to deterioration inspected again at suitable intervals. Records are to be kept of such inspections (Reg 6).
The safety and proper functioning of certain portable appliances and equipment depend on the integrity of the fixed installation.
